In this episode of WINNIPEG VOTES 2026, host Graham McDonald spoke to St. James candidate Tyler Crichton. He is running against incumbent councillor Shawn Dobson and Kelly Ryback, who finished second in 2022.

He has been endorsed by the Winnipeg Labour Council.

“The biggest thing that we talked about is that we’re gonna’ have open dialogue,” Crichton said about the endorsement, “and we’re gonna’ have conversations… we’ll listen to one another with respect.”

“I’m very passionate about workers,” Crichton continued, “the hard-working Winnipeggers. Working-class people make the world go round.”

He is in favour of replacing the St. James Bridge and separating combined sewer systems in the city.

He is the founder of “Less on Ness,” a neighbourhood group advocating for the speed limit on Ness Avenue to be reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h.

He said many residents have signs on their doors in support of a lower speed limit on Ness Avenue.

He is in favour of greater housing density along major transit corridors and believes there is a deficit of three-bedroom apartments in Winnipeg. He wants “flexible” zoning laws and rent-geared-to-income housing.

He believes that while his project management experience can be an asset for working in city government, ultimately a city “can’t be run like a business.”

“The city isn’t a business,” Crichton said, “businesses are profit-first. They’re there to create revenue… whereas a city, it has services that citizens rely on. Even if they’re not creating a profit, we still need to fund them.”

He cited garbage collection and emergency services as examples of services the city couldn’t dispense with even if they’re not profitable.

Crichton said his project management experience would help the city complete projects efficiently.
