In this episode of WINNIPEG VOTES 2026, host Graham McDonald spoke to candidate Ayaz Noor Mohammed, who is challenging incumbent councillor Ross Eadie in Mynarski.

Mohammed immigrated to Winnipeg about 10 years ago and initially lived on Jefferson Avenue. He chose to remain in the area and is now raising two young children there.

“My life in Canada started from Mynarski,” Mohammed said. “It is a home for me.”

Mohammed identified safety, accountability and improving the City’s response to service requests as his main priorities.

He proposed an online dashboard showing residents which areas have been identified as safety priorities, what action has been taken and the status of concerns submitted through 311. He also supports expanding community patrols beyond downtown.

“Downtown is not the city,” Mohammed said. “The city consists of all wards, including Mynarski.”

Mohammed said the City should install cameras on its vehicles that could identify potholes and automatically create service requests. He said this would reduce the need for residents to report infrastructure problems themselves.

On addictions and homelessness, Mohammed supports the supervised consumption site that opened August 11. He said it could prevent overdoses and move some drug use away from back lanes and vacant buildings, but should be accompanied by more treatment, rehabilitation and housing.

Mohammed also proposed stronger enforcement or policy changes to bring boarded properties back into use, including as affordable housing or community spaces.

After his first year in office, Mohammed said he would publish a report outlining what had been accomplished, how much had been spent and the timelines for outstanding work. He also promised monthly neighbourhood meetings and said he would donate 50 per cent of his council salary to organizations supporting Mynarski residents.

Mohammed connected his decision to run with his childhood experience of sometimes not having enough food. He said he feels a responsibility to use the opportunities he has received in Canada to help others.
