In this episode of WINNIPEG VOTES 2026, host Graham McDonald spoke with Adam Dudek, a lifelong Winnipegger, tradesperson and candidate for city councillor in Elmwood-East Kildonan.
“I decided to run for council because I love the people of my ward,” Dudek said.
Dudek said encouragement from a small-business owner in the ward ultimately convinced him to run.
He believes in separating combined sewers to prevent flooding and other issues in Elmwood-East Kildonan.
He is in favour of designated encampment sites modelled on Halifax’s approach.
“I’ve been working with a few advocates that actually went out to Halifax, helped build the programs, and now we’ve seen long-term results in terms of how it cleans up the city, how it reduces crime and then puts in better supports for people who are unhoused.”
Dudek’s platform calls for more overnight police patrols and more public safety cameras in higher-crime areas. He pointed to London, England’s extensive CCTV network as a model for the proposal.
He wants the city to permit round-the-clock construction on road projects away from residential areas.
“The overnight construction, we have other Canadian cities that currently do that,” Dudek said.
“We have a really weird penchant in this province for reinventing the wheel when we don’t really have to.”
Dudek said ward residents suggested the overnight-construction proposal while he was canvassing.
He supports rehabilitating rather than replacing the Louise Bridge. The city estimates the rehabilitation will cost approximately $40 million and extend the bridge’s life by 30 years. Dudek argued that rehabilitation would cost less over the long term than building a replacement.
On transit, he said that ward residents were a bit of a “mixed bag” when it came to opinions on the transit network overhaul, with some supporting the new system and others not. He’s in favour of the city exploring the possibility of eventually having light rail transit.
