In today’s digital age, LinkedIn has emerged as a powerhouse for professional networking, job searching, and career development. To delve deeper into the potential of LinkedIn, we spoke with Matthew Purdey, an experienced career coach who has helped countless individuals navigate the complexities of job searching, networking, and professional growth through LinkedIn.

“LinkedIn represents a huge opportunity,” Matthew begins. “It’s basically the biggest conference you’re ever going to have. It’s happening 24/7, and everyone’s invited.” Unlike traditional job fairs or networking events, LinkedIn allows you to connect with the world’s most influential and knowledgeable people anytime, anywhere.

LinkedIn isn’t just a platform for job seekers; it’s a hub for learning, growth, and connection. Matthew emphasizes shifting your mindset from searching for jobs to engaging with the community. “If you’re just here looking for jobs, it might be a frustrating place. But if you’re here to learn, grow, connect, and contribute, then it can be quite rewarding.”

Networking on LinkedIn is crucial, whether you’re actively looking for a job or not. “When you’re employed and maybe not looking for a job, it’s actually easier,” Matthew explains. “We are constantly meeting people and attending trainings and conferences. If you can get in the habit of adding those people to your LinkedIn network when you don’t need them, you’ll be building relationships that will pay off in the future.”

Matthew advises populating your profile with as much content as possible, focusing on critical sections like your profile photo, headline, experience, and education. LinkedIn also offers various features to enhance your profile further.

When approaching new contacts or advising job seekers, Matthew recommends a three-step strategy for growing your network:

  1. Start with People You Know: Connect with friends, family, neighbours, and classmates. These connections will likely accept your requests quickly and help you build a solid foundation.
  2. Expand to Industry Contacts: Search for and connect with people in your industry or city. Aim for complete profiles that align with your professional interests.
  3. Develop Different Strategies: Balance between a smaller, close-knit network and a larger, more diverse network. Both have their advantages and having a mix of both is beneficial.

Building a profile is just the first step. To truly benefit from LinkedIn, you need to engage with others. “Adding people to your network is a great example, but messaging them, commenting on their posts, and creating or posting original content is crucial,” Matthew advises.

Engagement means interaction. Matthew highlights the importance of meaningful interactions over passive activities like liking posts. “I would much rather see somebody leave two or three insightful, meaningful comments every day than 30 likes. The comments are going to be a lot more meaningful.”

Consistency in your activity on LinkedIn is key. Whether you post once a week or once a day, maintaining a regular presence helps keep you visible to your network. “If I’m posting once a month, but we’re consistent, then that’s fine,” Matthew notes. Consistency builds your personal brand and keeps you engaged with your network.

LinkedIn is a powerful tool for professionals at all stages of their careers. You can unlock its full potential by building relationships, engaging meaningfully with your network, and consistently contributing to the platform. Matthew Purdey highlights that “LinkedIn is more than just a job search tool; it’s a platform for learning, growth, and connection.”

Adopting these strategies allows you to maximize your LinkedIn presence and leverage it for long-term career success.
