Say Goodbye to Long Waits: Winnipeg Transit Plus Introduces Real-Time Tracking and More

The approximately 6,000 residents who utilize the Winnipeg Transit Plus system can expect things to get a little bit easier next time they book a ride.

Winnipeg Transit Plus is revolutionizing its service by introducing new self-service trip booking and fare payment options. Manager of Client Services, Theresa Platt, says these updates are designed to streamline and enhance the user experience for individuals eligible for these services. The current eligibility criteria include individuals who are legally blind, unable to walk the distance to a bus stop, those undergoing dialysis treatments, and individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia-related conditions.

“Our customers can expect a simplification of booking, so booking trips become easier. More booking options mean lower wait times and more efficient services. We will be offering real-time vehicle tracking, enhanced notifications, and in-app fare payments.”

Winnipeg Transit Plus is a specialized transportation service that operates parallel to the conventional transit system, offering door-to-door rides. With a customer base of nearly 6,000 registrants, the importance of accessibility is ever-growing, especially as the population ages. One of the upcoming initiatives of Winnipeg Transit is a review of the eligibility criteria, one that falls in line with the Ombudsman recommendations, the Winnipeg Transit Master plan, and the Accessibility for Manitobans Act. This review aims to ensure that the service remains inclusive and accessible to those who need it most.

The new self-service options include simplified trip booking and fare payment processes. Customers can now enjoy decreased wait times, more efficient services, real-time tracking of vehicles, enhanced notifications, and in-app fare payments. Platt says this marks a significant improvement from the previous system, which lacked these advanced features.

“Our previous software system really just wasn’t delivering the options required to deliver service and the experience required for our customers on accessibility that we thought was required and that our customers required.”

Through the collaborative process and approval of the city council, Winnipeg Transit was able to solidify a new vendor and is now rolling out the new system. This collaborative process aimed to find a system that could meet the diverse needs of the service’s users in a flexible and accessible manner.

The new app, launching on July 9th, will enable users to book trips 24/7 in their preferred language, track their vehicle in real-time, and access other features that enhance their overall experience.

For fare payments, customers can now attach a debit or credit card to their account, allowing for electronic cash (e-cash) purchases in increments ranging from $5 to $200. This e-cash ensures that funds stay with the customer until needed and allows fares to be paid at a reduced rate. While traditional payment methods such as tickets, tokens, and cash are still available, they do not benefit from the reduced fare rates, incentivizing electronic payments.

Winnipeg Transit Plus’ new self-service features represent a significant step forward in enhancing the accessibility and convenience of public transportation for individuals with disabilities. The service will continue to evolve, driven by ongoing feedback and collaboration with its community.
