Tyler Blashko, a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly (MLA), holds a unique role that ties his roots in Winnipeg to his political career. Blashko finds a deep connection in his work by representing the very community he grew up in.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, he values the long-standing relationships he has built, which greatly influence his approach to politics. Before entering the political arena, Blashko worked in education, leading programs for the Seven Oaks School Division in Northwest Winnipeg. Through this work, he found his passion for advocating on behalf of young people and their families. This path eventually led him to pursue a political career.
Blashko’s journey into politics wasn’t immediate. While at university, he had long been politically active, participating in volunteer work, nonprofit boards, and union politics. His desire to create real change for his community, primarily through education and advocacy, inspired him to run for office. Since his election in October, Blashko has focused on staying connected with his constituents. Whether through community events, online communication, or directly knocking on doors, he strives to listen to the concerns and needs of the people he represents.
“It’s important to have a personal relationship with the community,” Blashko notes, emphasizing that this connection makes problem-solving more accessible and more effective.
Regarding key issues in his community, Blashko highlights health care as a central priority. He recognizes Manitobans rely on a well-functioning health care system, whether it’s for surgeries, diagnostics, or everyday health care needs. Blashko acknowledges that while there is room for improvement, the government is working to ensure better access for patients and health care professionals.
Education is another significant focus for Blashko. His district includes many young families, and he’s committed to bringing more child care spaces into the community. He also aims to ensure that people working in education are fairly compensated for their important work. As a former educator, Blashko understands the crucial role schools play in supporting families and children, and he continues to work closely with schools to address any questions or concerns parents may have.
Blashko strongly believes in the connection between his work in the legislative building and the real-life concerns of the community. He explains, “If I’m disconnected from what’s happening in the world, I can’t make good decisions.” For him, staying present and engaged with the community is the key to being an effective representative.
In addition to his work with current constituents, Blashko also encourages younger generations to get involved in politics. Having worked with youth in the past, he understands the importance of helping young people discover their passions and talents. He often visits schools to speak with students about the value of political involvement and how they can participate, whether through running for office or supporting campaigns behind the scenes.
Blashko hopes to break down the barriers that make the political process seem distant and inaccessible. He emphasizes the importance of communication and engagement, whether through social media or in-person events, to make politics feel more relatable and open to everyone.
Blashko’s work as an MLA is defined by his commitment to his community, his passion for advocacy, and his desire to bridge the gap between politics and everyday life in Manitoba. Whether focusing on health care, education, or community engagement, his approach is grounded in a deep belief that the best decisions are informed by the voices and concerns of those he represents.
