A new book “In The Maelstrom” Examines Why Ukrainians Joined the Ranks of the Galicia Division of the German Army in WWII

15 березня історик презентував нову книгу під назвою «In the Maelstrom: The Waffen-SS ‘Galicia’ Division and Its Legacy». Перше комплексне дослідження дивізії “Галичина”. У цій книзі Мирослав висвітлює недосліджений український досвід служіння у дивізії під час і після війни – досвід, який має сильний резонанс сьогодні.

Тема дивізії є дуже суперечливою, не дивно чому історики знову і знову до неї повертаються. Велика кількість спірних запитань змушує дослідників знову відкривати архіви. Хоча багато людей вважають, що ця тема досліджена вздовж і поперек, Мирослав Шкандрій переконаний, що світ знає дуже мало правди про дивізію «Галичина».

Вперш за все, історик хотів дати відповіді на всі свої запитання, які викликали сумніви, проте коли він почав працювати над книгою, то усвідомив, що зовсім нічого не знає.

Над книгою Мирослав Шкандрій працював майже п’ять років. Аби видати книгу чоловік зібрав величезну кількість інформації з різних джерел, зокрема працював в бібліотеках, архівах, проводив інтерв’ю і допити зі свідками й ветеранами. За словами Мирослава, історія кожного воїна заслуговує на те, аби про неї дізнався весь світ, а на основі сюжетів можна писати цілі книги та знімати фільми. Адже те, до яких крайностей і дій доводилось вдаватись українцям під час другої світової війни аби залишитись живими, просто складно повірити.

Одне з найгостріших питань, яке обов’язково виникає, коли мова заходить за 14-ту добровольчу дивізію військ СС «Галичина», є питання військової присяги, яку приносили дивізійники. Одна частина істориків стверджує, що дивізійники є зрадниками й колаборантами, адже присягали не Україні, а особисто Адольфу Гітлеру і Третьому Рейху, інша ж частина істориків переконує, що вступаючи в дивізію українці вірили, що це єдина можливість відвоювати незалежність України.

Мирослав переконує, що однозначно правдивим є друге твердження. Хоча це наївно було з боку українських військових вступати до лав військ дивізії й сподіватись, що таким способом вони зможуть відвоювати незалежність України, проте за словами Мирослава в умовах війни складно приймати правильні рішення і передбачити до яких наслідків вони приведуть. На той момент це здавалось чи не єдиною можливістю побороти російський більшовизм і стати самостійною державою, про яку українці так мріяли й готові були віддати життя.

Підсумовуючи, Мирослав запевняє, що основна ціль його нової книги й попередніх полягає у тому, аби донести людям на Заході правду про Україну й українську історію.

«Зараз той час, коли люди на Заході намагаються зрозуміти українців. Я хотів зібрати базову інформацію аби люди змогли відповісти собі на всі запитання. Мабуть, з цього і вийшла ця книга.»

Завершуючи інтерв’ю, Мирослав робить висновок, спираючись на книгу: «Для того, аби не повторювати помилок у майбутньому, треба досліджувати й знати історію. Серйозно ставитись до цих важких запитань. Не треба боятись правди, треба її вивчати.»

With the Russians today claiming Ukraine as their own, and open questions as to why some Ukrainians joined a German Army division during WWII, and for some, why so many newcomer Ukrainians speak primarily Russian, the questions surrounding where the real loyalty of most Ukrainians lie today are pertinent to Yuliia Kovalenko’s interview with author and historian Myroslav Shkandrii, Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba, who did a deep dive into the questions of why some Ukrainians joined the German division in WWII.

On “Community Hour”, Professor Myroslav Shkandrii speaks about his new book “In The Maelstrom:The Waffen-SS ‘Galicia’ Division and Its Legacy.” It is the first comprehensive study of the Army Division “Galicia”. Myroslav asserts that the main goal of his new book and previous ones is to convey the truth about Ukraine and Ukrainian history to people in the West. “Now is the time when people in the West are trying to understand Ukrainians. I wanted to gather basic information so that people could answer all their questions. Apparently, this book came out of that.”

One of the most acute questions that inevitably arises when it comes to the 14th volunteer division of the SS “Galichyna” – the division that the Ukrainian soldiers joined – is the question of the military oath taken by the divisional members. Some historians claim that the Ukrainian in this Division are traitors and collaborators, because they swore not to Ukraine, but to Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich personally, while other historians are convinced that when joining the division, Ukrainians believed that this was their only opportunity to win Ukraine’s independence.

Myroslav is convinced that the second statement is unequivocally true. According to him, although it was naive on the part of the Ukrainian military to join the ranks of the division in hope that they would be able to regain the independence of Ukraine, it is difficult to make the right decisions in the conditions of war and predict the consequences. At that time, it seemed almost the only opportunity to defeat Russian Bolshevism allowing Ukraine to become an independent state, for which Ukrainians dreamed and were ready to give their lives.

The Professor is the head of the Department of German Studies and Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba and the author of monographic studies on the history of Ukrainian literature and culture. He has taught at many universities in Canada, Ukraine, and most recently at Columbia University in New York.

The topic of this armed forces division is very controversial. Historians have returned to it again and again. There are a large number of disputed questions which forces researchers to reopen the archives. Although many people believe that this topic has been thoroughly researched, Myroslav Shkandrii is convinced that the world knows very little of the truth about the Galicia division. The historian wanted to give answers to all his questions that caused doubts, but when he started working on the book, he realized that he did not know anything at all.

Myroslav Shkandrii worked on the book for almost five years. In order to publish the book, the man collected a huge amount of information from various sources, in particular, he worked in libraries and archives, conducted interviews and interrogations with witnesses and veterans. According to Myroslav, the story of every warrior deserves to be known to the whole world, and he says that entire books and films could be written based on the stories. The extremes and actions Ukrainians had to resort to during the Second World War in order to stay alive are simply hard to believe.

In this book, Myroslav illuminates the unexplored Ukrainian experience of serving in this division during and after the World War II, an experience that has strong resonance today. He speaks about what extremes the Ukrainian military had to resort to during the Second World War in order to stay alive.

At the end of the interview, Myroslav concludes based on the book: “In order not to repeat mistakes in the future, you need to research and know history. Take these tough questions seriously. You don’t need to be afraid of the truth, you need to study it.”
